The Old Cement Factory, (now known as Philippi Village) in Philippi, Western Cape is one of the oldest shooting locations in South Africa and it has a unique look. The recently (2015) renovated and upgraded structures including a Business HUB, more than before is an attractive site for film shoots due to the excellent infrastructural facilities available. The film industry is coveted by Philippi Village and the landowners have reserved outer buildings and land pockets especially for this type of activities leaving remains of the old factory untouched and unspoiled.
This site has been the location for several big movie production companies with The Maze Runner and The Residents Evil films very successful at the film booths. Although the shooting area is located inside the township of Philippi, the security staff of Philippi Village itself and other service providers are well experienced in guiding and cooperating with both the producers and Philippi Village to ensure optimum safety during shoots. Having a film site in a township has 2 big advantages: there are fewer restrictions and formal regulations to consider. Noise constraints are practically absent and freedom to improvise is also guaranteed due to the size of the site (approximately 19,768 acres). Local inhabitants are readily available to act as supporting staff (technical recce) for site built, sound technicians or light technician support at reasonable hourly rates. This also applies to the availability of cleaning, catering, staging or background actors etc.. English is spoken in the township – be it a specific South African dialect.
Working in a township that historically has been spatially segregated, brings more to the community than just an opportunity to make quick money during one film. True emancipation happens where people of different cultures work together towards a common goal (producing a film) in an unusual situation where historic divides are (temporarily) forgotten. These incidental interactions have proven to provide cultural insight and understanding on both sides of the conversation and have initiated career paths with local inhabitants formally not contemplated. The film industry in South Africa has taken a huge flight due to the beautiful settings, good weather conditions and variety of landscape. It is also a catalyst for social and economic development. Producing films in South Africa contributes to a higher GDP which trickles down to the poor to empower and grow.
